William Loren Shumway passed away Sunday, Aug. 16, 2020 at Trillium Woods in Byron Center after an eight month battle with cancer. Bill was born on July 30, 1949 in Detroit to his loving parents, Robert J. and Betty June Stamp Shumway. Bill was raised in Hastings where he graduated from Hastings High School in 1967. Bill served in the United States Army in Vietnam as an infantry soldier before being injured and honorably discharged. Bill worked for General Motor in Lansing where he retired after 38 years. In retirement, Bill worked for Walmart in Hastings for a handful of years. Bill is survived by Melissa, his loving wife of 52 years; his three children, Thomas (Sara) Shumway, Aaron (Kelli) Shumway, Callie (Aaron) Venhuizen; and grandchildren, Alexandrea, Aubree, Aaron Patrick, BrookLyn Kaiden, Addison and Jay. Bill is also survived by his five siblings, Brian and Ann Shumway, Janice Morgan, Robert and Marva Shumway, Michael and Vivianna Shumway, and Connie and Darrell Peterson. Bill was preceded in death by his parents. At this time, there are no plans for a memorial service.
