Rebecca Sassaman
Rebecca Sassaman was born July 30, 1914, in Charlotte, and passed away on January 1, 2021.
She was born and raised by her parents, Edward and Julia Elles, in the classic brick 1890 Victorian house on Cochran Avenue, Charlotte, built by her maternal grandparents, Frank and Nellie Spaulding.
She attended the Charlotte public grade schools and graduated from Charlotte High School. She then attended Rockford Women’s College and the University of Michigan. In 1934, she was married to Franklin Sassaman and lived in Charlotte where they raised their five children.
Franklin Sassaman preceded her in death in 1982, and her son, Dr. Frank Sassaman, preceded her in death in 2008. Rebecca was also preceded in death by her three brothers, Edward Elles, Frank Dee Elles, and David Elles (W.W. II).
Surviving are her four children, David Sassaman (Josie) of Cambria, CA, Julie Humphrey (Dick) of Maple Grove, MN, Margie (Kim) VanderVelde, Kalamazoo, Carey (Brad) Spotts, Bradenton, FL, and daughter-in-law Marilyn Sassaman of Kalamazoo.
Rebecca will be missed by nine grandchildren, Eric, Joe, Doug, Meg, Tyler, Julianna, Brooke, Annie and Betsy; and 15 great grandchildren, David, Doug, Maria, Sophie, Lucy, Harper, Kale, Emma, Trevor, Damon, Julia, Brady, Ally, Graham, and Adeliah.
Rebecca has been a blessing to everyone at Woodlawn Meadows for six years. She always said, “Everyone at Woodlawn Meadows were not employees, they were my family.”
She has inscribed her message of love on her children’s hearts, their children, the Elles family and all her many precious friends. Her proudest joy in life was raising a large family that loves each other and being together. Rebecca proclaimed her greatest learning from a long life was, “Love is what it is all about.”
The celebration of Rebecca’s life will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. The date to be determined. The family requests all donations be directed to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 315 W Center St, Hastings, MI 49058.
