George A Broadhurst passed away on November 20, 2020 at 4:30 p.m. surrounded by family at his home in Plainwell. He was born on January 7 1934 in Allegan, and lived around the Allegan, Otsego, Plainwell and Delton area throughout his entire life. He was number five of eight kids. He began scouting with the BSA at an early age. His first Scout Master was Leo Waters of Otsego. He later served as Scout Master for 15 years for troupe 171 in Prairieville. During his teenage years he had a fondness for convertible cars. His 1957 Ford Fairlane hardtop convertible was his favorite. He often bragged that he had the loudest car in all of Otsego. His mother- in-law, Delva, would agree with that because as soon as he headed down her street, the TV reception would mess up. “George is coming!” she would yell. He married Donna Curtiss on November 26 1955. They were happily married for 65 years. He was then drafted into the Army 7th Calvary and after basic training served in Japan for two years. He and his wife Donna bought a small one bedroom house on Pine Lake. Remodeling the house in his spare time, it expanded to a three bedroom year-round home. After retiring, they moved to Plainwell then back to Pine Lake and had a winter home in Okeechobee FL. For the past five years they have lived at Emerald Park in Plainwell. George was a lifetime fan of the Detroit Tigers speeding many days listening to Tiger baseball with Ernie Harwell on the radio and on TV. George worked at Fuller Transmission/Eaton Plant in Kalamazoo 30+ years and the Stryker Plant in Kalamazoo. He Retired in 1997. In his final years he did love family get-togethers, doing puzzles, playing Bingo helping out other residents, cooking and making new friends. He is survived by his wife, Donna; their three sons, George (Ruth), Barry (Michelle), and Tom (Nancy); eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; sisters, Arlene (his older sister), Rose (Tootie) Treece in South Carolina; brothers, Skip (Walter), and Bob; many nieces and nephews who are scattered throughout the countryside. He was preceeded in death by his parents, Frank and Fredia; sister, Marylin Bouters; brothers, Arthur and Herb. George will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
