Gary Lee Lydy

Gary Lee Lydy, age 87, of Hastings, passed away peacefully at home on Friday evening, Oct. 9, 2020. Gary was born on January 28, 1933, the son of George and Reba (Falconer) Lydy. He was raised on a farm in Carlton Township and attended Rogers Country School and Hastings High School, graduating in 1951. Gary entered the army in 1952 and was stationed at Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah. He married Laura (Betty) Buchee at the St. Rose Church in Hastings on January 24, 1953. Gary owned a dairy farm on M-43 north of Hastings and bought and sold dairy and beef cattle for many years. After selling this farm in 1978, he raised crops on a large farm just north of Freeport. During this time Gary became a real estate agent with Sandy Schondelmayer and with Century 21. During semi-retirement years, Gary and Betty operated a flea market business known as Southway Sales in Newaygo, during the summer months and at Lake Okeechobee, FL in the winter. They enjoyed travelling, too. Trips included Europe, Alaska, Mexico and the western United States. Gary enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, and going out to breakfast with his friends. He will be remembered for his many stories that he shared with everyone. Preceding him in death was his daughter, Sandy (Wayne) Gregory in California in 1983; a granddaughter, Tonya Lydy of Eagle River, AK, and great grandson, Elliott Gilbert of Lansing. Gary is survived by his wife, Betty; three children Sally (Dick) Oelke of Petoskey, Bob Lydy of Eagle River, AK, and Sue (Ivan) Gilbert of Kalamazoo. He leaves three brothers, Shannon (Lynette) Lydy, Mike (Rebecca) Lydy and Wayne (Jan) Lydy, all residing in Hastings, along with many nieces and nephews. Also, there are 12 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren that Gary enjoyed visiting. The family would like to thank the staff of Spectrum Health Hospice for their caring assistance and acknowledge Michigan Cremation for their excellent service. Remains will be interred at Fuller Cemetery in Carlton Township. The family plans to hold a graveside service and memorial gathering next year. Cards may be sent to 611 East Woodlawn Avenue, Apt 215, Hastings, MI 49058.
